What Is a Gas Safety Check?
A Gas Safety Check is required every 12 months by law. That means all commercial gas appliances in your business premises must be safety checked and serviced by a Gas Safe-registered engineer in line with an appliance’s instructions.
Let’s take a closer look at what a commercial Gas Safety Check typically involves.
Visual checks
An expert Gas Safe-registered engineer will visually inspect your kitchen, laundry and boiler room, including checking for signs of wear, corrosion or damage.
The engineer also verifies that the flue system is properly installed and unobstructed, along with assessing whether ventilation is adequate.
Visual checks
Operational tests are conducted to confirm your gas appliances are functioning within safe parameters. The engineer measures the gas pressure and flow rate while checking for any gas leaks in the pipework or joints using appropriate detection equipment.
Classification of faults
If faults are identified, the engineer categorises them according to industry standards. Appliances deemed ‘immediately dangerous’ are shut down and repaired before use.
Reporting
Following the inspection, our engineers will issue a Commercial Gas Safety Certificate (CP42). This document details any faults or recommendations, along with specifying the date by which the next inspection must be completed.
Remedial action
If any equipment or appliances are found to be unsafe or non-compliant, we’ll arrange for repairs or replacements to be carried out by a qualified engineer. In cases where the inspection fails, a re-inspection must be scheduled after the issues are resolved
Understanding the legislation
Annual Gas Safety Checks are required by law as part of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. But did you know that the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations of 1998 also state that all gas-related work, including fittings and checks, must be carried out by a licensed provider?
Failure to have a safety check carried out on your gas appliances at least every 12 months could lead to prosecution, so don’t delay in scheduling an inspection of your commercial laundry, kitchen and boiler equipment.
Gas Safety Certificates
As a Gas Safe-registered company, we make it easy for you to stay compliant. When you call us, we’ll arrange for one of our certified engineers to visit your premises. They will inspect your equipment and components to make sure that you are compliant with Gas Safety regulations.
Following a successful check, you will be provided with a ‘Gas Safe’ certificate containing:
- Descriptions and locations of all equipment and flues examined during the visit
- Details of the inspection and whether or not the equipment is safe to use
- Any defects or problems identified and any actions taken to provide solutions
- Outcome of visual inspection of equipment and gas pipework (supply)
- Details of any other work carried out
- The Gas Safe register number, name and the signature of the engineer
For commercial catering equipment, the gas safety certificate will also contain details of the ventilation/extraction system inspection for gas-burning equipment.
In addition to a mandatory annual Gas Safety Check, you should call a Gas Safety-registered engineer if:
- The pilot light continuously goes out on any gas appliance
- You see any black staining or ‘burn’ marks around a gas appliance
- Any of your commercial gas appliances are not working as they usually do
- An appliance starts burning with a soft yellow flame instead of a sharp blue flame
- Condensation suddenly becomes more noticeable

Why do I need a Gas Safety Check for my business?
A Gas Safety Check is a legal requirement every 12 months for all commercial premises. It ensures that your gas appliances, pipework and ventilation systems are safe, compliant and operating correctly. Failing to complete annual checks may result in prosecution or invalid insurance.
What is included in the Gas Safety Certificate (CP42)?
After a successful check, you’ll receive a certificate that lists all inspected appliances and flues, details of safety tests, any defects identified, actions taken, and whether the equipment is safe to use. The engineer’s Gas Safe registration number and signature are also included. Catering equipment certificates also record ventilation system checks.
What happens if faults are found during the inspection?
If an appliance is found to be unsafe or non‑compliant, the engineer will classify the issue and either recommend or carry out the necessary repairs. Equipment marked as ‘immediately dangerous’ will be shut off and cannot be used until fixed. A re‑inspection may be required once issues are resolved.
When should I call for an emergency gas engineer?
You should request an emergency call‑out if you notice signs such as a pilot light that won’t stay lit, unusual yellow flames, black soot marks, excessive condensation, or if appliances are not working normally. These may indicate dangerous gas faults and require immediate attention.
