FAQ's
Can I wash horse blankets in a washing machine?
Machine washing your horse blankets and rugs is the best way to maximise hygiene and reduce the risk of infection. However, the best washing machines for horse blankets will be commercial models that are big enough to handle large and unusually shaped laundry, and robust and reliable enough to wash soiled loads with horse hair.
How often should I wash horse rugs?
As with all laundry, how often you wash your horse rugs will depend on the environment your horses are in, and how often they get dirty. Some owners will wash rugs weekly, while others may wash them monthly.
Whatever routine you choose, we always recommend brushing any loose dirt and hair off the rug before you place it in the washing machine.
What size washing machine is best for horse rugs?
Choosing the right capacity washing machine for your stables will depend on the size and number of horses you look after. The majority of our equestrian customers use a 20kg commercial washer for horse rugs.
Busy stables or race courses will often choose a larger washing machine for horse blankets and other items, or operate multiple washers. Smaller setups may go for a slightly smaller size.
How do I properly disinfect a horse rug?
Horse rugs and blankets should be disinfected with a thorough wash in a suitable washing machine.
Traditionally, thermal disinfection is achieved by running cycles at high temperatures of 60C or above. However, many manufacturers recommend using 40C, or even 30C washes, to protect the quality of their horse rugs.
OTEX, JLA’s ozone washing technology, uses the natural disinfecting power of ozone to remove harmful bugs from horse rugs on a cool wash cycle. It’s a process that’s been proven to tackle equine influenzas, ringworm and 99.99% of all harmful bacteria.
Of course, any machine washing should be carried out alongside regular disinfection processes elsewhere in your stalls and stables.
Can you clean saddle pads in a washing machine?
You can! We recommend a low temperature wash for saddle pads, but you should aways refer to the manufacturer’s website beforehand.
As with any other items from your yard or stables, make sure you brush any dirt, debris or hair away before you put your saddle pads in the washer.
Are commercial warewashers used for disinfection in equine environments?
Yes. Warewashing solutions to ensure that feed tubs, bowls, scoops, buckets and other items are thoroughly sanitised.
This reduces the risk that infectious diseases, such as strangles or equine herpesvirus, will spread throughout a stable or equine hospital and threaten health.
