Care homes require a variety of detergents to maintain hygiene and cleanliness for residents, staff, contractors and visitors. Due to the vulnerable nature of the residents, infection control and adhering to strict hygiene standards are critically important.

This guide will outline the wide range of general cleaning, laundry and kitchen detergents used by care homes across the UK.

Laundry detergents

Infection control is key for a care home laundry room. The UK Department of Health and Social Care stipulates the ‘Appropriate decontamination of all care home laundry’, with detergents and cleaning chemicals forming a key part of the decontamination process.

Biological detergents
These contain enzymes that are very effective at breaking down protein-based stains like blood and food, which are common in care home laundry rooms. They often work well at lower temperatures and are known for their high performance.

Non-bio detergents
Non-bio detergents do not contain enzymes and are often preferred for sensitive skin, which can be a common complaint among some elderly residents and staff. They are usually less effective than biological detergents in lower temperature washes.

Laundry destainers
Destainers are used for removing stubborn stains and helping to maintain the brightness of fabrics. These can be low-temperature or oxygen-based and are ideal for cleaning clothing of some vulnerable residents who may be prone to accidentally spill food or drink on their clothing.

Fabric conditioners
Used in the final rinse to reduce wrinkles, fabric conditioners prevent static, and leave laundry feeling soft and fresh. Some also contain encapsulated fragrances for a longer-lasting scent helping to improve the laundry quality for residents to make them feel as comfortable as possible.

Emulsifiers
Emulsifiers help detergents work more effectively by breaking down grease, soiling and tough stains to improve rinsing and ensure garments are fully cleaned.

Otex detergents
Our OTEX biological liquid laundry detergent has been specifically developed to work in coordination with our OTEX ozone disinfection system. It removes stains and maintains linen quality and colour during the cool wash cycles in which OTEX works best.

Discover more information on our Otex disinfection laundry system.

General cleaning detergents

General cleaning detergents are important to ensure the overall hygiene and health of the care home, including reducing surface-transmitted illnesses.

Multi-purpose cleaners
These are the ‘go-to’ general cleaning cleaners and are used for cleaning various surfaces like floors, walls, and furniture.

Disinfectants
Commercial disinfectants are crucial for killing bacteria and preventing the spread of infections. They are available in various types, including those with bactericidal, fungicidal, and virucidal properties.

Floor cleaners
Different types are used for various floor surfaces, including hard floors, tiles, lino and even carpets. Due to the vulnerable nature of residents, spillages can happen frequently so a reliable commercial grade floor cleaner is essential.

Odor neutralisers
Odor neutralises and air fresheners are important for maintaining a fresh and pleasant environment, particularly in busy communal areas.

Commercial kitchen detergents

A care home kitchen requires a range of commercial cleaning chemicals and detergents to maintain high standards of hygiene and prevent foodborne illnesses. These products are typically more concentrated and powerful than household equivalents and are essential for maintaining hygiene standards in care homes.

Here are some common categories and examples of kitchen chemicals a care home might use.

Dishwasher detergents
Powerful formulas designed for commercial dishwashers to remove food debris, grease, and residue effectively in a high-volume setting. They can be liquid or powder-based and sometimes include built-in rinse aid or descaler.

Rinse aid
Used in the final rinse cycle to help dishes dry quickly and without streaks or water spots. This ensures glasses and crockery are presented aesthetically and frees up staff resource and time on drying.

Descalers
Descalers remove limescale and mineral buildup from the dishwasher machine, which can affect its performance, hygiene and leave an unpleasant odour.

Commercial oven cleaners
Oven cleaners are a ‘must have’ in every care home kitchen, including smaller properties to eliminate baked-on carbon and grease from ovens and grills, which are available in a spray, foam or gel form.

Staff training and advice

Staff must be properly trained with the different cleaning solutions and detergents before use, including how to handle and store them safely, the use of PPE and cleaning effectively to maximise hygiene.

Kitchen hoods, canopies and extractors are vital for health, safety and kitchen efficiency. With this in mind, upkeep and maintenance are vital to ensure they continue to operate as intended and you remain compliant with regulations.

This guide outlines the importance of cleaning your canopies, explains how often they should be cleaned and the tell-tale signs that your extractors aren’t operating as they should.

A smooth kitchen operation

Your extractor system works hard to remove heat, smoke and grease from your kitchen. Keeping it clean keeps your staff safer, and your equipment working harder for longer. Depending on how and what you cook, basic kitchen cleaning should be happening daily, with deeper cleans at least weekly.

Keeping compliant with regulations

TR19 guidelines, which shape best practice for cooker canopy and duct cleaning, recommend that your kitchen extraction system is professionally cleaned every six months. However, a full maintenance clean can be completed once a year unless your fire risk assessment recommends otherwise.

How often should a commercial kitchen hood be cleaned?

Basic cleaning should be carried out daily or weekly, however, a full ‘maintenance’ clean can be completed annually.

Sometimes a more regular professional clean may be required such as a recommendation from a fire risk assessment. Alternatively, it may be best practice to clean it more often in a very busy kitchen with a higher volume of grease buildup.

We also recommend more frequent professional cleaning if you notice issues like poor fan performance, lingering smells or visible grease buildup.

Cooking frequency and methods make a huge difference to grease output, as well as how often you’ll need to clean your kitchen’s extraction system. It’s also worth keeping in mind that high-frequency cooking speeds up grease accumulation, even with lower-grease methods.

Hybrid kitchens with multiple cooking styles should follow the most stringent cleaning schedule applicable. Regular inspections of filters, ducts, and hood interiors remains key.

Cooking methodEffect and impactCleaning frequency

Solid fuel (e.g. wood ovens)Soot and particlesMonthly (in line NFPA 96)
Grilling or pan-fryingModerate greaseQuarterley to semi-annually
Steaming, boiling or bakingMinimal greaseSemi-annually to annually

How to stay on top of grease build-up

Our top tips for keeping on top of grease build-ups include.

  1. Inspect your system daily: Check grease filters and containment systems (drip-trays, cups).
  2. Involve your team: Educate your people on minimising grease production (using lids, avoiding excessive frying).
  3. Consider placement: Make sure cooking surfaces are covered by extractor hoods to maximise grease capture.
  4. Book inspections: Certified technicians will check and verify sensor systems, cleaning effectiveness, and ductwork corrosion or damage.

How JLA can help your business

Our engineers can inspect, clean and service all parts of your canopy/hood system. Following a visual inspection of the extractor, access panels and filters they’ll complete a deep clean and service your unit to remove grease and other blockages/hazards.

As part of the canopy/hood inspection, JLA’s engineers will submit condition ratings for:

  • Canopy dims
  • Canopy lighting
  • Grease filter
  • Intake air allowance
  • Main canopy material
  • Amount of daily usage
  • Extraction fan
  • CO2 reading
  • General observations

You’ll also receive a certificate stating that your kitchen now meets HVCA TR19 standards. You can then provide your insurance company with evidence that you have met these standards.

Choosing the right commercial oven for your school kitchen

  • 23rd May 2025
When it comes to choosing the right commercial oven for your school kitchen, you’ll want to consider everything from energy savings to cooking efficiency, as well as the number of students you’ve got to feed every day. So what are your options? And which is best for your school?

Businesses working from smaller properties often ask JLA’s HVAC team whether cheaper domestic air-con units are a better investment than their commercial equivalents.

But when you’re weighing up performance, durability and compliance, we believe a commercial system is still your best option – even despite a higher cost.

In this post, we look at the key differences between domestic and commercial air conditioning – and explain why going commercial is almost always the right choice.

Commercial vs domestic AC: size and capacity

By design, commercial air conditioning systems are usually much larger and more powerful than their domestic counterparts. This is to help users control the temperature in much larger commercial properties like high-street shops, health clinics, care homes and shared office spaces.

Domestic units, on the other hand, are usually designed to cool smaller spaces like living rooms and bedrooms, and tend to lack power – and have to work harder – in larger spaces.

How durable are commercial AC units?

Commercial units are designed to run continuously during business hours and often all year round for effective climate control. This means they’re made from more durable components that can withstand wear and tear, making them much more reliable than domestic models which are used more intermittently, or even seasonally.

Assuming it’s been regularly serviced and maintained by an HVAC specialist, the lifespan of a commercial air conditioning unit should be around 15 years – far longer than most residential models.

Commercial units are more complex, but offer more options

Commercial air conditioning systems often involve multiple interconnecting units, with features including heat recovery and zoning that allow users to warm or cool different rooms within the same building. JLA’s commercial units can be wall- or ceiling-mounted:

Power inverter wall-mounted system
The sleek JLAWM range blends a host of outstanding features with a sophisticated pure white, flat panel, streamlined design. These units combine high seasonal efficiency and extreme flexibility with advanced control options and whisper-quiet operation. Plus, they’re easy to install.

4-way blow ceiling cassette system
The JLACS Standard Inverter range is a ceiling cassette system that rolls a host of outstanding features into a smart design. Offering advanced climate control options, the range provides real flexibility while being cost-effective throughout its life cycle.

How much will commercial AC cost?

Considering size, coverage, features and even their build quality, residential air conditioning systems are usually a lot cheaper to purchase upfront. Commercial models, meanwhile, offer far more in terms of features and performance, but tend to be more expensive.

However, there are always flexible funding options to help you spread the cost. Take JLA’s all-inclusive Total Care package, which offers the latest technology with nothing to pay upfront, inclusive servicing and repairs, and no hidden costs, for a single monthly fee.

You should also be able to access a range of service and breakdown contracts for existing commercial units; these will help you prolong your equipment’s service life while making sure it’s running safely and efficiently.

What about regulations and compliance?

When it comes to air conditioning, organisations across the UK must comply with legislation and regulations to keep their people and properties safe. Commercial environments are held to much more stringent standards for AC, which also covers regular servicing and maintenance. As standard, your organisation is expected to carry out:

  • Refrigerant checks to optimise efficiency and identify leaks
  • Filter inspections to ensure there’s a constant supply of clean, filtered air
  • Cleaning of debris to remove potentially harmful waste
  • Electrical maintenance
  • Lubrication of moving parts to minimise wear and tear
  • Inspection for blockages and signs of corrosion
  • Annual leak testing for systems up to 5 CO2 tonnes, or every 6 months for systems up to 50 CO2 tonnes

Failing to meet these standards could mean bigger problems down the line – including health risks, costly downtime, or even fines.

Is installation different for commercial AC?

With residential systems, installation is often straightforward – properties are likely to be smaller, and you’ll usually need fewer units. Commercial systems should be installed by industry professionals due to strict regulations, standards and the complexity of the work required.
